About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Head of Research Data Services, the Text Mining Specialist works closely and collegially with fellow Research Data Services team members and others inside and outside the library to a) identify existing support and research needs across the University, and b) develop a broad and deep range of services and initiatives to meet those needs and promote the acquisition of text analysis skills. The Specialist possesses expertise in text analysis techniques and is adept at applying those concepts and methods to the interests of faculty, staff, and students, regardless of their subject area or skill level.

Specific Responsibilities

The Specialist:

  • Trains and mentors colleagues and/or student workers to provide first-tier support and services.

  • Serves as a focal point for activities at the University related to text analysis and web scraping, bringing the diverse community together for discussion and collaboration.

We welcome applications from candidates who meet some of our qualifications and have a strong interest in developing their skills. We expect this position to be an ongoing learning experience and are dedicated to supporting professional development for all library staff members. We also seek colleagues who are committed to building an inclusive and diverse working environment and who have been and remain underrepresented or marginalized in the field of librarianship - including but not limited to people of color, LGBTQ+ people, individuals with disabilities, and applicants from lower-income and first-generation academic backgrounds.

    Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant discipline, and/or extensive experience in computational text analysis or web scraping projects.

  • Expertise in data collection, manipulation, and analysis, including deep experience with computational text analysis tools and technologies such as corpus building and cleaning, web scraping, and APIs.

  • Experience using common text analysis tools and/or platforms e.g., Voyant, Lexos, HathiTrust, Constellate, ProQuest TDM Studio.

  • Experience working with social media data sources, such as Twitter and Facebook.

  • Knowledge of coding languages applicable to text analysis and web scraping such as Python or R.

  • Experience working in a research environment, preferably in an academic setting.

  • Experience or interest in developing and leading workshops and individual consultations.

  • Commitment to building and contributing to a diverse, inclusive, and supportive work environment.

  • Excellent oral and written skills. Ability to clearly convey technical content to both technical and non-technical individuals and prepare self-service guides and documentation.

  • Interest in growing skills and service offerings to meet emergent research needs across the university.

We acknowledge that lists of skills and experience may overlook qualities that would most strengthen our team. We encourage candidates to speak about their experience and knowledge and tell us how it may connect to some of the qualifications for this position.
